Founder Nader Hasan says, “silence is an enemy, and it’s very, very tempting.” The article curiously calls the Nawal Foundation a “charity.” We don’t think of ourselves as a “charity” in the traditional sense, but as an educational and community outreach organization. We want to promote a message, and get Muslim- and non-Muslim-Americans on board with that message. So some of the peculiar discussion about a “charity” formed by victims, or not, doesn’t seem applicable to us. But we accept AP’s challenge to be as transparent and forthright as possible.
